Porto Cruz Ruby is a red fortified wine from the Douro Valley in Portugal, produced by the Porto Cruz house. It’s made from hand-harvested Douro grape varieties, fortified to preserve sweetness and aged briefly (often in large vats or wooden containers) to keep its fruit-forward character. With about 19% ABV, it’s designed to showcase primary fruit flavours rather than extended oak ageing.
Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Bright ruby-red colour, deep and vivid in the glass; clear and vibrant.
- Aroma: Intense aromas of red berries (cherry, raspberry, sour cherry), plums, with a hint of prune and a touch of vanilla from the wood influence.
- Palate: Full-bodied sweetness up front with juicy red fruits, marmalade of berries, and a balancing acidity; touches of caramel or vanilla soften the edges.
- Finish: Long and warming; fruit flavours linger (berries, plums), with a gentle sweet undertone and moderate finish that isn’t overly heavy.
- ABV: ~ 19%
Serving Suggestions: Best served slightly chilled (8-12 °C). Pairs excellently with dark chocolate desserts, berry-based sweets, strong cheeses. Also good as a digestif. Can be enjoyed over ice or with a splash of soda for a lighter style.
