Plymouth Sloe Gin is an English liqueur made by steeping sloe berries (from the blackthorn bush) in Plymouth Gin along with soft Dartmoor water and a modest amount of sugar, following a recipe dating back to about 1883. The steeping period is roughly four months. The sugar level is kept moderate so that the natural tartness and complexity of the fruit shine through, rather than merely masking them with sweetness. It is made without artificial colouring or flavouring.
Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Deep ruby-red hue, rich and clear, with a natural dark berry colour from the sloes.
- Aroma: Aromas of ripe sloe berries (wild plums), sweet cherry undertones, with a subtle hint of almond from the berry stones.
- Palate: Smooth, full and fruity; the sweetness of the berries is balanced by slight tartness, with the base gin’s botanicals adding spice, juniper, and gentle warmth.
- Finish: Long, fresh and fruity finish; lingering berry flavour with subtle bitterness and almond-like notes.
- ABV: 26 %
Serving Suggestions: Best served chilled or over ice. It’s excellent neat, but also very good in classic sloe-gin cocktails (such as the Sloe Gin Fizz). Pairs well with desserts, sharp cheeses, or used as a flavourful twist in gin-based mixed drinks. A few fresh berries or a slice of orange make good garnish.
